What is on the sheet
- Two games, eleven deals each, with a running total for both sides
- Columns for the play, the hand and the crib, so a miscount can be found
- The counting chart: fifteens, pairs, runs, flushes, his nobs and his heels
- The finish line at 121, and the skunk lines at 91 and 61
One page, in US Letter and A4, with half an inch of margin so it prints whole on a home printer.
How cribbage is scored
Points are pegged twice in every deal: as the cards are played, and again when the hands are counted with the starter as a fifth card. The first to 121 wins, at the moment they get there.
- Fifteen
- Cards adding up to fifteen, in the play or in the hand.
- 2
- Pair
- Two of a rank. Three of a kind is 6, four is 12.
- 2
- Run
- Three or more ranks in a row, in any suits.
- 1 a card
- Flush
- Four hand cards of one suit, and one more if the starter matches.
- 4 or 5
- His nobs
- The jack of the starter’s suit, in hand.
- 1
- His heels
- The starter turns up a jack. To the dealer, at once.
- 2
- Thirty-one
- Bringing the count in the play to exactly 31.
- 2
- Go
- Nobody else can play under 31, or the last card of the play.
- 1
The crib is counted like a hand with one difference: it scores a flush only when all five cards, the starter included, are one suit.
The rules of Cribbage have the whole game, with a worked example and a walkthrough.
Filling it in
Each deal, both sides write what they pegged in the play, what the hand counted and, for the dealer, what the crib counted. The total column is the score so far, which is all a board is.
Count in order: the non-dealer’s hand, then the dealer’s, then the crib. Near the end that order decides the game, because whoever reaches 121 first has won, even in the middle of a count.
A loser left short of 91 has been skunked, and short of 61 double skunked. Both lines are on the sheet.
Questions
Is the score sheet free?
Yes, it costs nothing. It needs a SquareScores account, which is free as well and is one tap with Apple or Google. Make one and you come straight back to this page to download.
Which paper sizes does it come in?
US Letter and A4, as two separate PDFs. Each is laid out for its own paper with half an inch of margin, so nothing is cut off and nothing has to be shrunk to fit.
Can I keep score at cribbage without a board?
Yes. A board is a running total with a memory, and the Total column does the same job. Writing the play, the hand and the crib separately also means a miscount can be found afterwards.
Does the sheet work for three or four players?
Four play as two pairs and each pair pegs to one score, so the two columns are the two sides. Three-handed cribbage needs a third column, which this sheet does not have.
How many deals are in a game of cribbage?
About nine for two players. The sheet has eleven rows to a game, which is enough for a slow one, and two games to a page.
Can I print more than one?
As many as you like, and photocopy them too. The sheet is for your own table, your club or your classroom.
Or let the phone draw the board
SquareScores draws the cribbage board on every player’s own phone. Peg your play, your hand and your crib and it moves the pegs, passes the crib round the table and calls the skunk.
