What is on the sheet

  • Three games, with rows for up to four pairs
  • The letters K-E-M-P-S printed in every row, to write over as they are taken
  • The four calls and whose letter each one is

One page, in US Letter and A4, with half an inch of margin so it prints whole on a home printer.

How Kemps is scored

In letters, and they are bad news. One letter is given out each round, to the pair that got it wrong, and the first pair to spell K-E-M-P-S is out.

Kemps, called right
Your partner had four of a kind.
Their letter
Kemps, called wrong
Your partner did not have it.
Your letter
Stop Kemps, right
You caught the other pair before their call.
Their letter
Stop Kemps, wrong
Nobody had four of a kind.
Your letter

You never call Kemps for your own hand. The whole game is that your partner has to notice the signal and say it for you.

The rules of Kemps have the whole game, with a worked example and a walkthrough.

Filling it in

Write each pair’s names in a row. When a pair loses a round, write over the next letter of the word in their row.

The first pair to spell the whole word is out and the game is over. With three or four pairs at the table the others are placed by their letters, and the fewest is best.

Nothing on the sheet is about signals. They are secret, and a sheet passed round the table is the last place to write one down.

Questions

Is the score sheet free?

Yes, it costs nothing. It needs a SquareScores account, which is free as well and is one tap with Apple or Google. Make one and you come straight back to this page to download.

Which paper sizes does it come in?

US Letter and A4, as two separate PDFs. Each is laid out for its own paper with half an inch of margin, so nothing is cut off and nothing has to be shrunk to fit.

How many players is the sheet for?

Four, six or eight, in pairs. Each game has four rows, which is room for up to four pairs, and there are three games to a page.

Is Kemps the same game as Kent, Cash or Signals?

Yes. It goes by Kent, Cash, Canes and Signals as well, and it is played and scored the same way. Some tables spell a different word; this sheet prints K-E-M-P-S.

Can a pair change its signal during a game?

Yes, between rounds, and a pair that has been caught usually should. Reusing a signal the other side has worked out is how rounds get stolen.

Can I print more than one?

As many as you like, and photocopy them too. The sheet is for your own table, your club or your classroom.

Or let the phone keep the letters

SquareScores keeps the letters for every pair on everyone’s own phone, one tap a round, and ends the match the moment a pair spells the word.
